Introduction To BSAC

The British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) was formed on the 15th of October 1953, by a group of "persons interested in underwater activities". Their aim was "to promote underwater exploration, science and safety in these activities".

BSAC is responsible for establishing and monitoring recreational diving standards for these activities. Although originally planned as a diving club for the London area, within days of its formation, other diving groups in the UK sought affiliation. In 1954, the club was recognised by the Sports Council as the governing body for the sport, and became a national entity with a series of Branches. The original group in London, which became London Branch No 1, is still active. With in excess of 40,000 members, in some 1800 branches worldwide, BSAC is the largest single diving club in the world.
